Sgt. Theresa Vail, aka Miss Kansas, will be the second contestant in the military (behind Miss Utah 2007, a combat medic in the Army National Guard) to compete in the Miss America pageant. Although she isn’t the first active member to compete, Vail will also be the first contestant to expose tattoos, considered a taboo in the industry.
Vail’s ink includes the U.S. Army Dental Guard insignia and the Serenity Prayer running on both her left and right shoulders.
As to why she’s doing this, Vail tells People Magazine, ”My whole platform is empowering women to overcome stereotypes and break barriers. What a hypocrite I would be if I covered my ink. How can I tell other women to be fearless and true to themselves if I can’t do the same? I am who I am, tattoos and all.”
In addition to that, she also engages activities such as archery, hunting, and skydiving.
